We have found that calls to the GDI GetPixel API are what is slowing down the display. We put it on a box and sure enough, displays can get so bad you can watch the UI display, control-by-control! They are then reporting that after working a while the software is slowing down dramatically when displaying dialogs or anything (it turns out) with buttons on it.
